Green Tamil Nadu Mission: A Greener Tomorrow with TREE Foundationmme
The Green Tamil Nadu Mission, a visionary project by Tamil Nadu Forest department aimed at enhancing the forest cover in Tamil Nadu. TREE Foundations collaboration with the Forest Department of Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, began with a focus on planting native saplings at the Biodiversity Experiential Centre in Kurumburam, Villupuram District.
The Importance of Trees
Planting trees is crucial for both environmental sustainability and human well-being. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, and trap pollutants, significantly improving air quality. They conserve water by storing rainwater, reducing runoff, and preventing soil erosion, which in turn replenishes groundwater supplies. Trees also provide essential habitats and food for wildlife, boosting biodiversity and ecosystem health. In urban areas, trees offer shade, reduce the heat island effect, lower energy costs, enhance neighbourhood aesthetics, and contribute to mental health and community well-being. In agriculture, trees maintain soil fertility and prevent desertification.
Our Journey
Our mission began with procuring native saplings from the forest department of Villupuram, offered free of cost under the Tamil Nadu Green Mission programme. These saplings were carefully nurtured at the Forest Extension Division in Ulundurpettai, under the expert supervision of the Forest Range Officer. Once robust and ready, TREE Foundation collected these saplings and transported them to the TREE Foundation Biodiversity Experiential Centre (BEC) Kurumburam, Tamil Nadu, India.
Planting and Care
At the BEC, we meticulously planned every step of the planting process. The land was prepared, pits were dug following proper protocols, and a special ceremony marked the occasion of planting the saplings. This center, located near the Kurumburam Reserve Forest, serves a dual purpose: contributing to reforestation efforts and acting as a valuable educational resource.
To ensure the young trees thrive, we erected fencing around the entire area. Each sapling was given additional support with a stake and a layer of mulch made from sand and dry leaves to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Finally, thorough regular watering ensured a healthy start for each sapling, bolstering forest cover.
A Collaborative Effort
TREE Foundation’s commitment to this project extends beyond planting. Our collaborative efforts with the Forest Department showcase the power of well-planned and executed initiatives. This project not only aids environmental restoration, habitat for native species but also educates future generations about the importance of protecting native saplings.
