Proposal for Funding - Year of the Turtle

RAISING MARINE TURTLE AWARENESS, EDUCATION CAMPAIGN AND COMMUNITY

CONSERVATION (Alternative Livelihoods for the Fishing Community) PROGRAMME

1 Organized a special "Year of the Turtle" Awareness walk

WILDLIFE WARDEN from PERIYA NEELANGARI FISHING VILLAGE - to NAINAR FISHING VILLAGE, UTHANDI a distance of 8 K.M.. The officials were accompanied by TREE Foundation’s Kadal Aamai Padhukavalargall (Sea Turtle Protection Force) youth from the 5 fishing villages and volunteers. The Wildlife Warden - Chennai the Ministry of Forest and Environment has promised the boards to be up by Feb 15th

4 Involve celebrities to announce YoT and/or participate in high-profile activities

5 Produce merchandise such as T- shirts, caps, reflecting national themes and languages (also can be used for reward purposes)

6 Organize NEST program for Beach front residents

7 Organize major public events, such as festivals etc.

Public participation in Turtle walks, Sand modeling competitions for village youth\women

8 Insert appropriate YoT "public service messages" in TV and radio programs on national networks, in cinemas etc.

9 Development of information leaflet / media kit, e.g., with details of turtle biology, folklore and DVD\ CD short film with potential for modification and adaptation for national level.

10 Produce printed materials bearing the YoT in local language and English for national audiences - such as leaflets, posters, turtle identification brochures and postcards

Sponsors will be looked for printing the materials, to be developed by Tree Foundation

11 Issue marine turtle postage stamp(s) to celebrate YoT, if possible

July 2006

Tree Foundation will take up this matter with Postal Department for issuance of postage stamp

12 Undertake a national census of' nesting populations

August - December 2006

Prepare proposals to seek Funding .

13 Organize a turtle photo / poster competition for the general public

October 2006

Colleges and high school children along the East Coast to participate

14 Conduct training seminars for fishers. Also TED Training and awareness raising of fishing community on TED

After showing the film taken during the year’s season and the problems Faced by turtles due to non use of TED.

15 Develop one new significant conservation action with the Fishing Community – Community Conservation

Work jointly with all groups working on Turtle and Marine conservation- to explore possibilities.

16 Highlight / raise the profile of marine turtles in ongoing environmental campaigns and activities, For Awareness in Fishing Villages, schools and colleges
