Community Development

To help communities grow progressively and independent of external pressures, a good rapport between members is essential. Self sustaining programs and cultural activities that draw the women, youth and children together help in the long run in bringing about a better understanding and a real purpose towards which the community moves. In this endeavor we have initiated some programs as detailed below:

Pungamiya Bio Diesel

Youth Workshop

Organic Composting, Vermiculture and proper methods of waste disposal have been introduced.

MRC (Murugappa Research Centre) was kind enough to send their technical expert to help the village groups.


Planting and maintenance of trees in the villages by the youth groups.

Tree Planting

Eco Mela (Eco Festival) – cultural, art, craft and talent events are held to help bring together people from various communities:

  • Painting competitions on the Sea Turtle was held in 4 villages. About 80 children participated.

  • Sand Modeling competitions were held to instill the importance of the role of the sea turtle in the coastal biodriversity. The competitions were held on 14th December 2003 in 4 villages. There were over 120 participants (youth and children of the fishing community).

  • A street play “NIRAINDHA KATTUMARAM” explaining the inter-relatedness of the turtle with the life of the fisherman was staged on 10th and 11th January 2004 in all the 5 villages. The actors and the director were student volunteers from the colleges of Arts & Crafts and S.R.M. College.
